No matter where Josh is, his interest in his environs combined with his kind and thoughtful nature provoke a deep sense of admiration from others. This website reconstructs Josh’s recent experiences from the perspectives of those who have benefited from crossing paths with him.
Josh referred to 2008 as the “year of the local.” The year in which he extended and deepened the sense of place he was cultivating around Cottage Grove, Oregon. 2009 was his “year of the global”, in which he followed up on his responsibilities as a Teaching Fellow for the International Honors program by visiting friends and family dispersed around the world.
On July 31, 2009 Josh’s travels were put on hold after being detained in Iran for reportedly crossing the border with his two friends Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd.
For Josh, 2010 was the “year of the future”, in which he would decide about graduate school or some other pursuit that would mark his life trajectory. We hope that sharing these intimate reflections on Josh will begin to express the extraordinary individual who he is. We, Josh’s family and friends, want to share with the world how he has touched our lives and hope that doing so will help to speed his return to us and allow him to resume his journey.
